Data Sensorium

Data Sensorium is a project that aims to create sensory experiences of data, translating and transmediating across visual, aural, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory registers. If we begin with data that we can see, what does it sound, feel, smell, or taste like? How does our experience of how data feels change if we add additional senses? Or if we experience it in the absence of one of these senses? How can we make these data experiences available online to share sensory experiences across distance?

In pursuit of answers to these questions, Data Sensorium interfaces with artistic and creative practice, critical data studies, data visualization and visceralization, disability studies, aesthetic theory, and community engagement to interrogate our collective and individual experience of data through the senses.

We are currently working on our first exhibit, “The Sense of Campus,” which takes soundscapes collected on the Dartmouth campus and reimagine and reinterpret the sonic data for other senses. Visitors to the exhibit will be able to experience the soundscapes in concert with or in the absence of other sensory experiences of the data. For example, how does touching sound while listening to it create a new, focused experience of places we routinely, unthinkingly inhabit? How does smell augment the experience? When we remove one of these senses, how does our perception of the data change? We’re also exploring how 3D scanning and immersive storytelling can make at least some sensory aspects of data available for others who’d like to engage with a sensory experience of campus.

Status as of 2024

• We’ve collected hours of soundscapes from indoor and outdoor public spaces on campus, with the assistance of Dartmouth students Mehmet Can Yilmaz, Vidhi Piparia, Sofia Ishpahani, and Jesuferanmi Ayanlade.
• Along with students, we are experimenting with using the sounds to create instruments, ambient soundtracks and lo-fi beats, and are mapping the sounds to speculatively imagine a different kind of university from these sounds.
• With translator, curator, and ceramics artist Veronika Yadukha, we are exploring how to translate sounds from particular locations into tactile experiences, such as this pot that encodes sound data through textures:

Text Mining the University

This project facilitates data-driven approaches to race and equity in higher education in the U.S. today. For our proof-of-concept, we are exploring how universities responded to the U.S. Supreme Court Decision banning affirmative action in college admissions.

Status as of 2024

• I’ve crowdsourced a corpus of more than 300 university emails containing statements about the decision.
• I’ve been working with Dartmouth students Matthew Currie and Helen Deng to identify appropriate methods to analyze the corpus, using the Python Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK).
• We’re in the process of analyzing the results from our NLTK adventures.

Insurgent Academics

The book “Insurgent Academics” recovers the leading roles that African diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American scholars have played in the emergence of public humanities.

In this moment of turmoil in U.S. higher education, public humanities scholarship is increasingly positioned as an intervention poised to recuperate the value of the humanities and, in turn, encourage reinvestment in the university as a public good. For all the compelling strategies proposed — outreach with communities outside of universities, communication strategies for engaging multiple publics, increased access to knowledge — a searing omission is clear: for over a century, African diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American scholars laboring both in and outside of universities have been undertaking such work. These tenure-line and contingent faculty, librarians, staff, administrators, and those working outside of universities are the unsung vanguard of public humanities scholarship.

The book explores historical and contemporary intellectual moves made by these scholars in the United States from the late 19th century to the present, uncovering a mode of intellectual labor in the humanities that I term “academic insurgency”: a subversive style of engagement in humanities knowledge production marked by fluid and flexible leaps between genres of writing; between public audiences, academic audiences, and community partners; between modes of scholarly communication; and between academic disciplines and temporalities. Academic insurgency weaves together the past, present, and future of public humanities knowledge production, connecting contemporary developments in public humanities within African diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American studies to a longer trajectory of interventions made by these thinkers within and beyond the academy.

This lineage begins with professors’ protest literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, then continues with the academic trajectories of a range of activist scholars and thinkers, including Ida B. Wells, Girindra Mukerji, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. Du Bois, Lehman Brightman, Angela Davis, Grace Lee Boggs, Gloria Anzaldúa, Fred Ho, Audre Lorde, Martha Cotera, Helen Zia, Karthar Dhillon, Sylvia Wynter, bell hooks, Wilma Mankiller, Mallika Dutt, Devon Mihesua, and Chela Sandoval. Academic insurgency also manifested in movements in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s to establish Black and ethnic studies departments, as well as in the emergence of third world and postcolonial feminisms in the 1980s and 1990s. It endures today through initiatives such as the African American Digital Humanities Initiative, U.S. Latinx Digital Humanities, Digital Native American and Indigenous Studies, and the Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium, as well as through digital and analog projects undertaken by small collectives and individual scholars. For more than a century, this mode of intellectual labor, though unrecognized, undervalued, and even penalized, has shaped humanities knowledge production, implicitly and explicitly critiquing the limits of the university while transforming it. The survival tactics deployed by these thinkers are a cornerstone of the strategies that have been identified as key to addressing contemporary challenges within higher education. And, perhaps more critically, their practices are poised to ensure long-term survival of a deinstitutionalized humanities in a future where the existence of humanities departments is far from assured.

Long before it was a survival strategy for the humanities and for higher education, public humanities was a survival tactic for these communities. Well before it was in vogue, these scholars undertook public humanities work at considerable risk to their careers — and still do. Thus, in the drive to recover the value of the humanities and demonstrate the importance of the university to diverse and doubting publics, it is imperative to correct this historical wrong by rewriting these scholars into the history — and present — of higher education and to learn from their instructive examples of how to transform institutions, communities, and the very nature of what it means to be an “academic.”

As an “account,” rather than a “history” or “genealogy,” “Insurgent Academics” addresses these conversations thematically, tracing the ways academic insurgency has manifested in the scholarship of African diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American scholars through their practices at particular junctures. Themes addressed in the book’s chapters include: the urgent stakes of academic insurgency in contemporary higher education; the hyperfocus of critical university studies on the experiences of white faculty, administration, staff, and students; the embrace of interdisciplinarity by minoritized scholars as a multi-pronged approach to mitigating social inequities; the collaborations between scholars and communities that challenge the presumption that the university is the locus of expertise; the innovations in multimodal scholarship that communicate with audiences beyond the academy and put the tools for creation of knowledge in their hands; the mutable temporalities of academic life for scholars who engage in academic insurgency; and the ways academic insurgency offers a path for sustaining the humanities in uncertain institutional futures. Each chapter illuminates a theme by telling the stories of African diaspora, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American, thinkers, articulating how their public humanities work fuels the fires of academic insurgency as well as the dangers inherent in it.

The Pan-Africanism Data Project

The Pan-Africanism Data Project documents attendees of key events and gatherings of the Pan-Africanist movement from 1900-1959. In addition to making this data available, the project aims to:

• Develop linked open data practices to support the development of interoperable data for Black digital humanities.
• Apply these practices to extant datasets as a proof-of-concept for interoperable Black diaspora data.
• Use the datasets to explore how to visualize the absences in Black diaspora data.

Given the limited resources for Black digital humanities, my project asks how we can develop data practices that allow those of us doing this work to collectively pool our datasets in a format that makes them usable to each other — and beyond Black studies.

Status as of 2024

• I’ve created the initial data sets with Salem State students Jennifer Mahoney and Hibba Nassereddine through archival and secondary source research to identify pan-Africanist events and locate information about attendees.
• I’ve worked with Dartmouth students Ore James, Nyashadzashe Jongwe, Vy Nguyen, and Mikayla Walker to improve the data sets.
• I received a fellowship from the African American Digital Humanities Initiative (AADHum) at the University of Maryland – College Park to partner on this project.

The Global Du Bois

The Global Du Bois brings together a series of data visualizations that challenge the long-held belief that W.E.B. Du Bois’s investment in decolonization is a later move in his intellectual trajectory. Data visualizations will offer researchers the opportunity to explore several data sets: Du Bois’s correspondence, indicating the global span of his interlocutors over the course of his life; Du Bois’s travels, demonstrating his remarkable carbon footprint; citations of his novels, offering strategic insight into how narratives of the global nature of Du Bois’s work have developed; and a multimedia digital edition of Du Bois’s novel Dark Princess (1928).

Status as of 2024

• I’ve worked with Dartmouth students Felix Davis and Helen Deng to develop a map of Du Bois’s travels, with the generous support of Steven Gaughan and Research Computing at Dartmouth. We’re adding more data and details about Du Bois’s voyages to the nearly 500 locations on the map. • I’m currently working with Dartmouth student Zihan Zhang to develop visualizations of citations to Du Bois’s novels. We’ve created data sets with the citations and are ready to start analyzing and visualizing the citation data.
• I’ve worked with Dartmouth students Kaija Celestin and Fiona Stawarz and am currently working with Pumho Karimi to develop the multimedia digital edition of Dark Princess.
